Yoli Bárcena

Assistant

Yoli Bárcena

"If you want to change the world, change yourself" perfectly sums up Yoli's story: it is never too late to start over, especially when the change means devoting yourself to your true vocation.

Cantabrian through and through, her whole life has been linked to the world of animals and shelters. That is why she changed her professional path in 2017, when she decided to take a Veterinary Technician Assistant course, later specializing in feline medicine in 2018 with the Master's for Veterinary Assistants in Feline Medicine at the prestigious Gattos Feline Clinical Center, in Madrid.

She has been part of the team at Clínica Veterinaria Somo from the very beginning, fulfilling her dream of dedicating herself to what she is truly passionate about. Her areas of special interest are the clinic's front desk, intensive care for hospitalized patients and assisting in surgery.

Over these years her training has continued without pause, including:

  • Feline Nutrition course (Animal Nutrition specialty) by AVEPA.
  • Course on Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (Behavioral Medicine specialty) by AVEPA.
  • Course on the use of antibiotics in companion animals (Internal Medicine specialty) by AVEPA.
  • Course on feline kidney and urinary diseases (Feline Medicine and Internal Medicine specialty) by AVEPA.

Spending time with her cats and Cantabrian gastronomy are her two great passions.

Quique Gómez

Veterinarian

Quique Gómez

A graduate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Extremadura in 2013, our Salamanca-born vet knew from a very young age that his life would be linked to the animal world. His grandfather's influence and growing up surrounded by animals awakened a deep veterinary vocation in him.

After completing a one-year internship at the Veterinary Clinical Hospital of the University of Extremadura, he continued his professional career working in different clinics and hospitals, where he developed his passion for surgery, traumatology and veterinary dentistry.

When the opportunity arose to return to Cantabria —a region that had won him over years earlier— he did not hesitate. He packed his bags and joined the team at Clínica Veterinaria Somo, where he enjoys caring for and helping to improve the lives of his furry patients and their families every day.

Throughout his career he has built a solid training background, including a University Master's in Internship in Medicine and Surgery of Companion Animals, a second university master's in Introduction to Health Sciences Research, and various postgraduate courses in soft tissue surgery, anesthesia, traumatology and dentistry in small animals. Alongside all this, he had the chance to complete a stay in the Surgery Department of the Canis Veterinary Hospital in Mallorca.

Outside the clinic, he likes to stay active practicing CrossFit, as well as enjoying reading and the trips that allow him to disconnect, recharge and discover new experiences and cultures.

Bárbara Herrero

Assistant & Groomer

Bárbara Herrero

A city girl by birth but a country soul, this Santander native showed an endless vocation for the animal world from childhood, which led her in 2010 to start as a volunteer at an animal shelter doing cleaning and care tasks.

In 2014 she obtained her qualification in Canine Grooming and Veterinary Assistance, and she has been dedicated to it and growing professionally ever since.

She has been part of the team at Clínica Veterinaria Somo from the very beginning, being a key pillar and the person in charge of canine grooming. In addition, she has knowledge and training in dog handling, as in 2018 she obtained the Professional Dog Training qualification from AKINDI. Most recently, she completed a specialization course as a Laboratory Assistant at CUAS.

In her personal life, her day-to-day revolves around her "little zoo", where she enjoys, together with her partner, her hens, rabbits, turtles, a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig as well as her three dogs and four cats. One thing is clear: she has no time to get bored!

Azucena Mijares

Assistant & Groomer

Azucena Mijares

The latest to join the team, she combines the roles of assistant and canine groomer. Azu worked in the small animal care sector, but in 2008 she decided to take a professional break for personal and family reasons, always being very clear about the idea of returning to work with small animals as soon as possible.

In 2022, with the full return to normality after the Covid-19 pandemic, she decided to rejoin and began working in various clinics and veterinary centers as a receptionist, assistant and canine groomer. As fate would have it, our paths crossed in 2024 and she joined the team with great enthusiasm and passion.

The time she enjoys with her children and husband is her greatest treasure.
